The custom breeding option allows Morgan breeders to utilize our farm’s broodmares, and our experience in handling young horses. It is our goal to help Morgan enthusiasts create horses that are a joy to own. A lease agreement is drawn up to identify responsibilities and fees of the parties, the terms and guarantees are comparable to those in most stallion breeding contracts.
At Signing of Agreement
A non-refundable fee of $500 is paid to Absolute Morgans (AM). The lessee will contract with stallion of choice and will be responsible for all breeding fees and expenses. AM will arrange for artificial insemination on the premises, or the mare may be shipped to the stallion if necessary. There will be no charge for handling the mare when at AM, but all vet and breeding-related expenses will the responsibility of the lessee.
At 14-Day Pregnancy Confirmation
Upon confirmation of pregnancy at 14 days, the lessee will pay the monthly boarding fee for the mare at AM while in foal, and breeding-related vet expenses. AM will retain exclusive use of the mare, and with approval of the lessee, may continue to show the mare during the remaining season. AM will assume all expenses for maintenance of the mare (training, routine shoeing, worming, annual vaccinations) during the lease period.
At Foaling
Upon foaling and determination by the vet that the baby is of normal health and condition, the lessee will continue to pay AM board and care for the mare and foal until weaning (usually at 4 months of age) at the wet-mare board rate. AM will handle the foal (halter break, assist in vet and hoof care, etc.) and coordinate registration of the foal with AMHA. The lessee of the mare, as owner of the foal, will assume all expenses of the foal, and will be listed as the breeder on the registration papers. If the mare is available for another breeding contract (at the discretion of AM), the current lessee has right of first refusal for re-breeding.
At Weaning
Upon weaning, the contract for the mare lease will expire. Owner of the foal can continue to board the foal at AM at the standard board rate, or make arrangements for sale or shipment to another location.
